The Modular Merchant shopping cart includes options to receive real-time shipping rates from FedEx, UPS, and U.S.P.S.
If these third-party real-time shipping rates are enabled, then the shopping cart will send the following information to the third-party shipping rate server:
-
"Ship From" address
Typically, the "Ship From" address is the store's address, as set in the Company Information section of the System Settings. However, if the product is assigned to a dropshipper, then the "Ship From" address is the dropshipper's address, as set in the Dropshipper Editor.
-
"Ship To" address
The "Ship To" address is the customer's shipping address.
-
Dimensions
The dimensions of the product, as set in the Shipping & Fees section of the Product Editor.
-
Weight
The weight of the product, as set in the Shipping & Fees section of the Product Editor.
Multiple Products
If an order contains multiple products, the shopping cart first moves each product with the Ships Solo setting to its own shipment.
Next, the shopping cart divides up products that do not ship solo into combined shipments, based on "Ship From" and "Ship To" address. Each shipment consists of products which have the same "Ship From" and the same "Ship To" address.
Then, the shopping cart calculates the estimated dimensions and estimated weight of each shipment. The estimated dimensions consist of the length of the longest product in the shipment, the width of the widest product in the shipment, and the height of the tallest product in the shipment. The estimated weight is the sum of the weights of all of the products in the shipment.
Finally, the shopping cart sends the following information for each shipment to the third-party shipping rate server:
-
"Ship From" address
-
"Ship To" address
-
Estimated shipment dimensions
-
Estimated shipment weight
The third-party shipping rate server will then send back appropriate rates for each shipment.
