A Digital Object is the download, website or other online content that a customer gains access to when they purchase a digital product.
in other words...
My online store sells music. A customer purchases the latest album from up-and-coming Yugoslavian techno band Another Robot. The album contains ten tracks, each provided as a separate MP3 file.
After making their purchase, the customer logs in to my store's download area where they see a download button for each of the ten MP3 files I've assigned to the product. Each of the MP3 files I've attached to this product is a Digital Object.
Examples of Digital Objects
Here are examples of things that can be used as Digital Objects:
Computer Files
Any type of file — such as a .zip file, .mp3, .pdf, etc. — may be used as a Digital Object. After their payment is approved, the customer may download the Digital Objects associated with the digital products they have purchased. The store's Download Area will include a separate Download button for each Digital Object that is a computer file.
Web Page URL
A web page address (URL) can also be used as a Digital Object. This allows you to sell access to a website, and prevent the website's URL from being displayed to the customer. The store's Download Area will include a separate Access Website button for each Digital Object that is a web page URL. The button will open the web page in the customer's web browser without revealing its URL.
Flash
Both standard Flash (.swf files) and Flash Video (.flv) files may be used as Digital Objects. The store's Download Area will include a separate Play Media button for each Digital Object that is Flash content. The button will stream the Flash content in a modal window without revealing its URL or providing the option to download it.
Kindle / Nook eBooks
Kindle and Nook ebook files may be used as Digital Objects. For each compatible Digital Object listed in the store's Download Area, an option to send the ebook directly to the customer's Kindle or Nook device will be available.
More amazing facts about Digital Objects
One or more Digital Objects can be assigned to a product.
For example: A product that is a downloadable Greatest Hits album could have a few dozen MP3 files assigned to it.
A Digital Object can also be assigned to more than one product.
For example: An MP3 of the song, Martian Holiday could be assigned to both to the artist's current album and a completely different product that's a compilation of songs about Martians.
